The Soweto Derby:Is it really dead?

The clash of the big titans. The biggest fixture in South Africa's football calendar. The one fixture that divides the entire nation into two, with one half backing the boys in black & white, and the other half backing the boys in black & gold.

The Soweto Derby between Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates & Kaizer Chiefs is seen as one of the biggest derbies in Africa. However, questions have been raised as to whether this game has lost its spark or not.

The clash between the Mighty Buccaneers & the Phefeni Glamour Boys always brings hype in the media.Days leading to this historic encounter always create a buzz. Now with the KZN derby between Lamontville Golden Arrows & Amazulu, together with the Tshwane derby between SuperSport United, people now suspect that the Soweto Derby buzz is now dead.

When we look at the Tshwane derby, people would say that it's slowly starting to take over due to their big spending power during the transfer window as well  their big name signings in the off season.Someone will look at signings made by the Soweto giants & say that these names,as well the names that appear on the starting line-up,these names don't excite fans & will be the cause of a derby snore.

However, one cam argue that currently the signings made by Chiefs & Pirates do bring excitement to the fans. For the Buccaneers, names like Siyabonga Sangweni,Sameegh Doutie,Rudolf Bester & so forth, whom are new recruits, all bring the fans to the stadium. For Chiefs, new names such as Bernard Parker,Lehlohonolo Majoro & Keegan Ritchie also bring te fans to the stadiums. So currently both teams re making reasonable signings

Another thing someone must consider is the fact that both teams are the teams that have the highest support base in this country. So no matter what the result is at the end of 90 minutes,it will always have people talking about the game. Therefore,it is safe to say the the buzz of the Soweto Derby is far from dead
